The fifteen puzzle appeared in the 1870s and drove the world to distraction. Sam Loyd offered $1,000 to anyone who could solve it with tiles 14 and 15 swapped, but that configuration is mathematically impossible. Only half of all arrangements are reachable from the solved state. Every slide changes the parity. This is a fact about permutation groups, hiding inside a children's toy.
